Case Study: Energy Queensland

Delivering Reliable DC Chargers and Battery Systems for Critical Infrastructure

Energy Queensland needed a reliable and compliant DC power solution for both new and existing substations. The objective was to implement a system that integrates seamlessly with current infrastructure, allows for future scalability, minimises failure points, reduces maintenance requirements, and meets all Australian standards.

R&D Technology was engaged under a period contract to design and engineer a complete DC power system across multiple voltage platforms 24V, 32V, 48V, 110V and 125V DC, tailored to meet the operational and environmental demands of each site.

Challenges

The project’s objective was to deploy a robust DC battery charger system that could operate reliably across diverse substation environments. Key challenges included:

  • Meeting compliance regulations across all installations
  • Maintaining uniform cabinet design across voltage platforms
  • Integrating with existing switch room specifications
  • Delivering staggered systems on time without compromising quality
  • Managing technical complexity across multiple voltage levels
  • Designing a low-maintenance, reliable system suitable for remote sites
  • Ensuring the system incorporates redundancy for uninterrupted operation

Engineering a Custom DC Power Solution

To meet these requirements, we developed and delivered a comprehensive engineering package that included:

  • Convection-cooled rectifier modules to reduce maintenance and minimise component failure
  • Custom-designed enclosures and components tailored to Energy Queensland’s specifications
  • Standardised drawings and detailed manuals for installation and operation
  • Ethernet-enabled SNMP/Modbus communications for real-time system monitoring
  • Rigorous hardware testing in collaboration with Rectifier Technologies
  • Local stocking of spare parts and provision of system training
  • Ongoing engineering review and technical support throughout the project lifecycle

Results

The solution was built on a foundation of collaboration and technical precision. By partnering with Rectifier Technologies, we ensured fast manufacturing turnaround times and long-term support for the DC systems.

Engaging Energy Queensland throughout the design process enabled a solution that aligned with their operational goals and infrastructure requirements.

Key outcomes:
  • Streamlined Infrastructure: Standardised DC systems across substations
  • Reduced Lead Times: Faster delivery through increased local stock holding
  • Improved Uptime: Reliable systems supported by locally stocked spares
  • Scalable Design: Simplified maintenance and future upgrades
  • Enhanced Serviceability: Standardised part numbers and documentation
  • Responsive Support: Queensland-based technical assistance
